Item Embargo The background levels of heavy metal concentration in sediments of the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia(Elsevier, 1993) Ahmad Ismail; M.A. Badri; Mohd Noor RamlanThe west coast of Peninsular Malaysia is exposed to several sources of pollutants, predominantly from human activities. In this study heavy metal contamination was studied in the sediments collected from sampling stations all along the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia.Item Embargo Heavy metal accessions to the forest floor of an urban forest reserve in Kuala Lumpur city, Malaysia(Elsevier, 1993) A. Ahmad-Shah; M. Radzi Abasb; A. Mohamad-NorA study was carried out to determine the total accessions of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in bulk precipitation, throughfall, stemflow, and litterfall at a secondary forest in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This study shows that the urban environment of Kuala Lumpur contributes a considerable amount of heavy metals to the atmosphere and forest floor as reflected by the high metal contents in bulk precipitation, throughfall and stemflowItem Embargo Heavy metal concentrations in sediments off Bintulu, Malaysia(Pergamon Press Ltd, 1993) Ahmad IsmailThe present work thus provides a baseline against which the contamination from future developments in the Bintulu Port area may be assessed.Item Embargo Trace metals in sediments and potential availability to Anadara granosa(Springer, 1994) I. Mat; M. J. Maah; A. JohariTrace metals in the sediments non-residual fraction and their relative abundance in various sedimentary components from the culture bed of Anadara granosa were investigated.Item Embargo Trace element contamination around centres of gold mining: examples from peninsular Malaysia(Springer, 1994) T. M. Williams; N. Breward; A. J. Lumb; C. CumminsMetalliferous mineral exploitation remains central to economic growth in many developing countries, despite increasing awareness of the negative impacts on the environment and human health. Mining of auriferous sulphides can induce acid drainage and mobilisation of toxic elements such as As during the weathering of mine spoil.Item Embargo Determination and speciation of heavy metals in sediments of the Juru River, Penang, Malaysia(Springer, 1995) Poh-Eng Lim; Mun-Yoon KiuThe Juru River flows through largely urbanized areas and is grossly polluted by domestic wastes and discharges from pig farms. Other than carrying highly polluting organic materials, these wastes are also contaminated with heavy metals. To ascertain the extent of heavy metal pollution in the river, total and non-residual concentrations of Cu, Pb, Zn, Mn and Fe in sediment samples collected along the river were determined.Item Embargo Heavy metals composition of some soils developed from basic and ultrabasic rocks in Malaysia(UMS, 1996) Sahibin Abdul Rahim; Mohamad Md. Tan; Baba MustaTopsoil samples developed on basalt parent material are widely exposed in Segamat, Johor and Kuantan, Pahang, whereas topsoil samples developed from serpentinite parent material widely exposed in Telupid and Ranau, Sabah. The topsoil were analysed for Co, Cr, Cu, Pb, Ni and Zn content. The values were compared to the threshold concentrations which indicate the permissable level of heavy metal concentration in soils.Item Embargo Hydrocarbon Pollution in the Sediment of Some Malaysian Coastal Areas(Springer, 1997) Md. Pauzi AbdullahA study was carried out at some selected coastal areas of Malaysia to determine the present status of hydrocarbon pollution. Five sites were chosen and these include Pulau Langkawi and Pulau Ketam in the west coast, Tanjung Piai in the south, and Pulau Tioman and Kemaman in the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia.Item Embargo Radioactivity levels and concentrations of heavy elements in black sand(Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya, 1999) Noorddin IbrahimThe radioactivity levels and concentrations of heavy elements in Langkawi black sand have been studied through gamma ray spectroscopy. Direct gamma counting was used for measuring the activity of the natural radionuclides uranium, thorium and potassium, and neutron activation analysis for detecting the presence of other heavy elements.Item Embargo Identification of bacterial diversity from an oil-spill contaminated marine environment in Tanjung Karang, Selangor, Malaysia(Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya, 2001) Noor Faizul Hadry Nordin; Amir Feisal MericanBacteria were isolated from crude oil contaminated muddy beach by using the liquid enrichment culture method. Two different types of samples have been taken which are in solidified form and in liquid form (from seawater as oil slick). Colony and cell morphological studies as well as physiological and biochemical studies using classical biochemical test were used to identify some of the isolates as bacteria from the genera Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, Moraxella, Neisseria and Staphylococcus.Item Embargo Geokimia bagi beberapa logam berat di dalam sedimen teras hutan paya bakau Sungai Bebar, Pahang, Malaysia(UMS, 2002) Kamaruzzaman, B.Y.; Hasrizal, B.S.; Jamil, B.T.; Effendy, A.W.MThe accumulation of elements Zn, U, Pb and Th with respect to depth were determined in a 150 cm sediment core obtained from the mangrove forests of Bebar, Pahang, Malaysia. Item Embargo Bioremediation of petroleum contaminated beach sediments: Use of crude palm oil and fatty acids to enhance indigenous biodegradation(Kluwer Academic Publishers, 2004) J. P. Obbard; K. L. Ng; R. XuAmendment of simple organic carbon, in the presence of inorganic nutrients, to oil contaminated beach sediments can potentially stimulate the biodegradation of hydrocarbons by the indigenous microbial biomass. The ability of crude palm oil (CPO) and fatty acids, in the presence of soluble inorganic nutrients (C:N:P = 100:10:1), to stimulate biodegradation in sediments amended with Arabian light crude oil was investigated in laboratory microcosms over a 30-day period.Item Embargo Trace metal concentration in the surface sediments of Paka mangrove forests, Terengganu, Malaysia(Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya, 2004) Kamaruzzaman, B.Y.; Ong, M.C.; Willison, K.Y.S.Surface sediment samples ftom 2 transects (20 stations) of mangrove forest of Paka were analyzed for the concentrations of Mn, Cu, Zn and Pb. In this study, the average concentrations of Mn, Cu, Zn and Pb were 112.4 ± 3.6 µ/g dry weight, 18.1± 0.91 µ/g dry weight, 44.9 ± 0.22 µ/g dry weight and 24.1 ± 0.36 µ/g dry weight, respectively. The calculated enrichment factors (EF) obtained for Cu, Zn and Pb can be considered to have the terigeneous in sources while Mn, which has slightly higher value, was probably influenced by anthropogenic input. The concentration of metal especially for Mn and Pb, increased with the decrease of mean size particle, suggesting their association with the fine &action of the sediments.Item Embargo Heavy metals in soils and crops in Southeast Asia(Springer, 2004) Bernhard A. Zarcinas; Che Fauziah Ishak; Mike J. McLaughlin; Gill CozensIn a reconnaissance soil geochemical and plant survey undertaken to study the heavy metal uptake by major food crops in Malaysia, 241 soils were analysed for cation exchange capacity (CEC), organic carbon (C), pH, electrical conductivity (EC) and available phosphorus (P) using appropriate procedures. These soils were also analysed for arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), mercury (Hg), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) using aqua regia digestion, together with 180 plant samples using nitric acid digestion.Item Embargo Evaluation of the pollution levels of landfill sites - the Landfill Pollution Index (LPI)(Environmental Management Society Malaysia, 2004) Theng Lee Chong; Mohd Nasir Hassan; Muhamad Awang; Mohd Yazid SamanMost of the solid waste disposal sites in Malaysia are either open dumps or controlled tipping. The pollution levels from these sites are expected to be high especially the contamination of soil, air, surface and underground water. All these pollutions have direct and indirect links to human being. The risks associated with solid waste disposal sites involved three compartments or media, i.e. the atmosphere, water and soil. This "Cross media"or "Multimedia" impacts phenomenon has been recognized in various countries as being of potential importance and complicated. This study discusses the development of a new and simple evaluation system to assess the pollution levels of landfill sites.Item Embargo Leaching potential of pesticides in a vegetable farm in the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia(Springer, 2004) B.
