BalamuruganA public perception survey on sewage treatment plants carried out in selected areas in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur revealed several interesting and unexpected findings. The general perception patterns regarding odour, noise and visual impact, suggest that the perceived intensity is a function of the time of adaptation. It was also revealed that pests constitute a serious nuisance, to which adaptation was not possible.Item Open Access Technological and economic evaluation of solid waste scavenging and recycling practices(Universiti Pertanian Malaysia Press, 1996) Zainur Dalila Abd Malek; Mohd Nasir Hassan; Nasiman SapariExisting solid waste scavenging and recycling practices in the Klang Valley, Malaysia were investigated through personal visits and field surveys to landfill sites, trading companies and factories involved in recycling. Collection of recyclable material has long been practised in landfill sites as it provides good additional income. Dealers of scrap and recyclable items who operate at the landfill sites provide a source of supply to manufacturing concerns. Glass recycling industries benefit greatly by using recycled cullet, which improves fuel efficiency. It evaluates the awareness and attitude of a group of 541 from 14 universities. The figure to 541 is considered the representative of these students and the selection was based on Stratified Random sampling method and G-power soft ware. These people who once highly depended on the forest resources are the most affected. This study was done with the purpose to reveal the importance of forest as a source of their basic need and income for indigenous people and their future generation through the lens of history and place. A qualitative study had been done on the indigenous people that live in three villages in Pekan District, Pahang. Kajian yang menggunakan metod temubual bersemuka ini melibatkan 600 orang responden terdiri daripada pengundi di Negeri Kedah di 16 Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN) terpilih yang dijalankan pada 6 April 2012 hingga 9 April 2012. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa kebanyakan responden di Negeri Kedah mengharapkan kerajaan negeri memberi perhatian yang lebih kepada persekitaran setempat mereka. This provides an interesting argument for enhancing their role in sustainability transitions. Malaysia is a relevant geographical context in this regard since almost all of its citizens formally embrace some kind of religious belief. The flood damage map contains both qualitative and quantitative information which corresponds to the consequences of flooding. This study only focuses on physical elements. Three different damage functions were adopted to calculate the potential flood damage and flood depth is considered as the main parameter. A wide variety of agricultural activities are running in Malaysia. Maintaining high quality of agricultural products with lower environmental impacts through a sustainable economic viability and life satisfaction of farmers and community are important factors helping to meet sustainable agriculture. Human resources are playing key role in directing the community toward sustainable development. The trend of improving the human development index in Malaysia is highest in the East Asia and the Pacific, high human development countries and the world, since 2000. Precision agriculture is providing strong tools to achieve sustainable agriculture. Different types of sensors, positioning and navigation systems, GIS, software and variable rate technology are well known components of precision agriculture. Drones and robots are promising tools that enabling farmers and managers to collect information or perform particular actions in remote areas or tough conditions. According to a survey, forestry and timber, rubber production and oil palm estates are three main agricultural divisions that precision agriculture may improve the productivity in respect to area of cropland/worker. We used the contingent valuation method (CVM) for a monetary valuation of farmers' preferences for a planned adaptation programme by ascertaining the value attached to address climatic issues in the Malaysian agricultural sector.
