Extenuation of saline solutes in shallow aquifer of a small tropical island: A case study of Manukan Island, North Borneo
(Thai Society of Higher Education Institutes on Environment, 2010) Ahmad Zaharin Aris; Mohd Harun Abdullah; Sarva Mangala Praveena; Mohd Kamil Yusoff; Hafizan Juahir
Intensive exploitation of groundwater from Manukan Island, s aquifer has disturbed the natural equilibrium between fresh and saline water and has resulted in the increase of groundwater salinity and the hydrochemical complexities of freshwater-seawater contact. It was observed that the mixing between freshwater-seawater has created diversity in the geochemical processes of Manukan Island, s aquifer and altered the freshwater and seawater mixture away from the theoretical composition line.

Water quality of streams and wells of north Perlis: a comparative analysis
(Environmental Management Society Malaysia, 2007) Wan Ruslan Ismail; Haslina Sarju; Mashhor Mansor
Water resources in catchment area came from various sources. Water from the surface infiltrate and leached down to the ground water. Land use activities on the surface will affect water quality of both surface and underground water. Underground water has been use by Malaysian as their water resources. Perlis and Kelantan are the two states in Malaysia that have a lot of wells still in use for water supply especially during dry season. This study investigates the spatial and temporal changes in water quality of surface and ground water of north Perlis from July 2001-December 2001.

High-resolution electrical resistivity tomography and seismic refraction for groundwater exploration in fracture hard rocks: A case study in Kanthan, Perak, Malaysia
(Elsevier, 2021) Sean Cheong Heng Lee; Khairul Arifin Mohd Noh; Muhammad Noor Amin Zakariah
This research article describes the integration of high-resolution electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and seismic refraction to explore potential groundwater in fracture carbonate hard rocks. Data Levels Synthesization (DLS) method is developed where the data levels of two different optimized arrays were merged to produce one final subsurface resistivity image to achieve high-resolution ERT. Numerical modeling was initially conducted on three different geoelectrical arrays.

Assessments of seasonal groundwater recharge and discharge using environmental stable isotopes at Lower Muda River Basin, Malaysia
(Springer, 2018) Mohd Khairul Nizar Shamsuddin; Wan Nor Azmin Sulaiman; Mohammad Firuz Ramli; Faradiella Mohd Kusin; Kamarudin Samuding
An accurate estimation of groundwater recharge is required to properly manage aquifers, especially for riverbank filtration method (RBF) purposes. The isotopes correlations and differences in different water bodies were studied to assess the sources of groundwater recharge and preliminary tools in understanding of the surface water and groundwater interactions in the Lower Muda River Basin.

Groundwater and surface-water utilisation using a bank infiltration technique in Malaysia
(Springer, 2014) Mohd Khairul Nizar Shamsuddin; Wan Nor Azmin Sulaiman; Saim Suratman; Mohamad Pauzi Zakaria; Kamarudin Samuding
Bank infiltration (BI) is one of the solutions to providing raw water for public supply in tropical countries. This study in Malaysia explores the use of BI to supplement a polluted surface-water resource with groundwater. Three major factors were investigated: (1) contribution of surface water through BI to the resulting abstraction, (2) input of local groundwater, and (3) water-quality characteristics of the resulting water supply.

Understanding of groundwater salinity using statistical modeling in a small tropical island, East Malaysia
(Springer, 2011) Sarva Mangala Praveena; Mohd Harun Abdullah; Kawi Bidin; Ahmad Zaharin Aris
This paper presents an understanding of groundwater salinity by identification of effective factors using chemometric methods (cluster analysis and multiple linear regressions) in Manukan Island, Sabah. Local groundwater and environmental properties were used to explore the effective factors of groundwater salinity.

Controlling factors of groundwater hydrochemistry in a small island's aquifer
    (Springer, 2007) A. Z. Aris; M. H. Abdullah; A. Ahmed; K. K. Woong
Factor analysis was applied to the hydrochemical data set of Manukan Island in order to extract the principal factors corresponding to the different sources of variation in the hydrochemistry. The application of varimax rotation was to ensure the clear definition of the main sources of variation in the hydrochemistry. The geochemical data of dissolved major, minor and trace constituents in the groundwater samples indicates the main processes responsible for the geochemistry evolution. By using Kaiser normalization, principal factors were extracted from the data for each location.

(Springer, 2021) Usman Abdullahi Usman; Ismail Yusof; Muggundha Raoov; Yatimah Alias; Jonathan Hodgkinson; Nurzaidi Abdullah
The application of thin-section petrography, field emission scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (FESEM–EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermo-analysis, and laser Raman spectral analysis methods can be combined to characterize iron-ores and distinguish clay minerals in alluvial soils. The integrated methodology developed for this work provides the basis for a generic mineral characterization toolkit. Five main alluvial soil types have been defined in the upper layer of the lower Kelantan Basin, Malaysia: sand with low clay content, clay sand, sandy clay, mottled clay, and mud-sand.
