    Effect of the tide on flood modeling and mapping in Kota Tinggi, Johor, Malaysia

    This study aimed at mapping the Kota Tinggi flood event in 2006/2007 that had caused massive damages to properties and the environment. The flood was associated with unusually high intensity and continuous rainfall, and high tide. Therefore, a reliable technique of floodplain mapping is crucial for the improvement of flood control strategies and for preparing an evacuation plan. The main objective of this study is to incorporate the effect of tide on flood modeling analysis.

    Simultaneous determination of organochlorine pesticides and bisphenol A in edible marine biota by GC MS

    A study to assess the level of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and bisphenol A (BPA) in edible marine biota collected from coastal waters of Malaysia was conducted using GC-MS and SPE extraction. An analytical method was developed and validated to measure the level of 15 OCPs and BPA simultaneously from five selected marine species.

    Abundance and distribution of microplastics in tropical estuarine mangrove areas around Penang, Malaysia

    Our study aims to provide a basic understanding on the abundance of MPs present in mangrove estuaries around Penang and assess the extent of its pollution. We are interested to see whether the influence of anthropogenic activities coincides with the severity of MP pollution of the study sites. Our study also aims to provide meaningful data that can be used for pollution management and control. Furthermore, we aim to narrow the knowledge gap on MP pollution in Malaysiathat will encourage mitigation efforts in the near future.

    The degradation and toxicity of commercially traded vegetable oils following spills in aquatic environment

    The production of commodity and specialty vegetable oils is increasing every year to fulfill the ever-increasing demand where the trading of oils occurs primarily via sea shipping. Spills of vegetable oil into the aquatic environment may result in detrimental effects on aquatic ecosystems. Environmental degradation of vegetable oil spills occurs mainly via microbial activity, chemical oxidation, wave and wind actions. However, the polymerization of oils can hinder their ability to naturally degrade. Thus, human intervention in the form of both short- and long-term remediation, is desirable to reduce the effects of vegetable oil spills on aquatic ecosystems.

    Terrestrial anionic surfactants (AS) enter the marine environment through coastal region. Despite that, in general limited knowledge is available on the coastal AS transfer pathway. This paper aims to assess the distributions and exchange of AS in the Peninsular Malaysia coastal environments, adjacent to the southern waters of South China Sea and Strait of Malacca.

    Occurrence, abundance, and distribution of microplastics pollution: an evidence in surface tropical water of Klang River estuary, Malaysia

    Microplastics have been considered as contaminants of emerging concern due to ubiquity in the environment; however, the occurrence of microplastics in river estuaries is scarcely investigated. The Klang River estuary is an important ecosystem that receives various contaminants from urbanised, highly populated areas and the busiest maritime centre in Selangor, Malaysia. This study investigates the abundance and characteristics of microplastics in surface water of the Klang River estuary.

    Anthropogenic nutrient pollution has been identified as one of the key stressors of coastal ecosystems. However, the paucity of long-term nutrient records limits our understanding of both the extent of nutrient pollution as well as of the ecological impacts. Here, using coral skeletal phosphorus (P/Ca), we reconstructed a half-a-century record of seawater phosphate at Port Dickson, Malaysia.

    The launch of Roadmap towards Zero Single-use Plastics in 2018 demands baseline data on the management of marine debris in Malaysia. In 2021, Malaysia is placed 28th top plastic polluter in the world with plastic consumption at 56 kg/capita/year, therefore data on mismanaged plastic is imperative. This paper reviews the abundance and distribution of marine debris in selected Malaysian beaches over the last decade (2010-2020) and discusses issue on its management.

    Marine litter is recognized as an increasing component of marine ecosystem pollution. In this baseline study, we document the magnitude, types, sources, and potential impacts of litter on six coral reefs in East Sabah. We applied a simplified classification of litter to extract abundance data from video transects.

    Endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) such as hormones, pesticides, phenolic compounds, and pharmaceuticals compounds can cause adverse effects on humans, animals, and other living organisms. One of the largest mariculture areas situated in Pulau Kukup, Johor, Malaysia, is actively involved in exporting marine fish to other countries worldwide. This paper aims to provide baseline data on the level of EDC pollutants found in mariculture sediments in Malaysia since no reports have investigated this issue.

    Mangrove macroalgae as biomonitors of heavy metal contamination in a tropical estuary, Malaysia

    Until recently, there have been only few published reports concerning the use of mangrove macroalgae as biomonitors to assess the estuarine metal contamination. Therefore, the present study was an effort to investigate the biomonitoring of metal contamination using mangrove macroalgae in the tropical Miri estuary of Sarawak, Malaysia. The metal concentrations (Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn) were determined in the surface sediments, estuarine water, and six dominant macroalgae species that epiphytically grow on mangrove pneumatophores.

    Prolonged high biomass diatom blooms induced formation of hypoxic-anoxic zones in the inner part of Johor Strait

    The Johor Strait has experienced rapid development of various human activities and served as the main marine aquaculture area for the two countries that bordered the strait. Several fish kill incidents in 2014 and 2015 have been confirmed, attributed to the algal blooms of ichthyotoxic dinoflagellates; however, the cause of fish kill events after 2016 was not clarified and the causative organisms remained unknown. To clarify the potential cause of fish kills along the Johor Strait, a 1-year field investigation was conducted with monthly sampling between May 2018 and April 2019.

    Microplastics analysis in Malaysian marine waters: A field study of Kuala Nerus and Kuantan

    The first report on the emergence of microplastic in Malaysian marine waters was documented in this study. Water samples were collected from two regions, namely Kuala Nerus and Kuantan port, as the representatives of different anthropogenic activities. Identification of microplastic was performed based on physical characteristics (colour, shape, density) and chemical characterisation (ATR-FTIR analysis) for a functional group of polymers.

    Spatial assessment and source identification of heavy metals pollution in surface water using several chemometric techniques

    This study presents the determination of the spatial variation and source identification of heavy metal pollution in surface water along the Straits of Malacca using several chemometric techniques. Clustering and discrimination of heavy metal compounds insurface water into two groups (northern and southern regions) are observed according to level of concentrations via the application of chemometric techniques.

    This study was conducted to determine the composition of surfactants in the sea-surface microlayer (SML) and atmospheric aerosol around the southern region of the Peninsular Malaysia. Surfactants in samples taken from the SML and atmospheric aerosol were determined using a colorimetric method, as either methylene blue active substances (MBAS) or disulphine blue active substances (DBAS).

    Baseline metals pollution profile of tropical estuaries and coastal waters of the Straits of Malacca

    The status report on metal pollution in tropical estuaries and coastal waters is important to understand potential environmental health hazards. Detailed baseline measurements were made on physicochemical parameters (pH, temperature, redox potential, electrical conductivity, salinity, dissolved oxygen, total dissolved solid), major ions and metals concentrations at estuaries and coastal waters along the Straits of Malacca.
