Item Embargo Development of Water Quality Modelling using InfoWork River Simulation in Malacca River, Malaysia and Contribution Towards Total Maximum Daily Load Approach(IOP Publishing, 2018) Siti Aisyah Che Osmi; Wan Faizal Wan Ishak; Mohammad Adam Azman; Abdullah Siddiqi Ismail; Nurlin Abu SamahThe water quality modelling is an important tool to simulate water quality analysis and river management by addition of pollutant loads. Present work has developed water quality modelling by using InfoWork River Simulation version 10.5, to simulate the water quality condition by doing pollution reduction analysis. The modelling framework is developed to simulate the load reduction for Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) as the pollutant controlled at the selected area.Item Embargo Distributions and source apportionment of sediment-associated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and hopanes in rivers and estuaries of Peninsular Malaysia(Springer, 2015) Mehrzad Keshavarzifard; Mohamad Pauzi Zakaria; Tan Shau Hwai; Ferdius Mohamat Yusuff; Shuhaimi MustafaIn this study, the distributions and sources of sediment-associated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and hopanes in the Malaysian rivers and estuaries were evaluated.Item Embargo Spatial variation of water quality parameters in a mangrove estuary(Springer, 2015) K. BradleyThis paper describes the potential benefits to be gained from improving the quality of urban rivers and evaluates the methods commonly used to quantify such benefits. The difficulties encountered in quantifying non-use benefits in developing countries are discussed with particular reference to the River Klang that drains the urban conurbation of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, where as in many other locations in developing countries the only potential benefits are the most difficult to justify, namely indirect and non-use benefits.Item Embargo A preliminary study of the distribution of selected trace metals in the Besut River Basin, Terengganu, Malaysia(Springer, 2008) S. Suratman; H. C. Hang; N. A. M. Shazili; N. Mohd TahirThis paper presents a preliminary result carried out in the Besut River basin, Terengganu, Malaysia to determine the selected trace metal concentrations.Item Embargo Relative contributions of different local sources to riverborne microplastic in a mixed landuse area within a tropical catchment(Elsevier, 2022) Hui Ling Chen; Sivathass Bannir Selvam; Kang Nee Ting; Kim Yeow Tshai; Christopher Neil GibbinsThis paper reports on work which aimed to quantitatively assess the relative concentrations and types of microplastic delivered from differed sources to a second order river. The study was undertaken in a mixed landuse area within a rapidly urbanising catchment in Malaysia. Over a six-week period, water samples were collected from road culverts and drains in residential and industrial areas across the area to assess microplastic concentrations, while inputs from atmospheric deposition and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) were also quantified.Item Embargo Metal distribution and contamination of the Mamut River, Malaysia, caused by copper mine discharge(Springer, 2004) M. F. Ali; L. Y. Heng; W. Ratnam; J. Nais; R. RipinThis study was carried out along the river bank of Mamut and Kipunyit Rivers to ascertain whether the river is safe for human recreational activities after the cessation of mining.Item Embargo Assessment of surface water quality of selected estuaries of Malaysia: multivariate statistical techniques(Springer, 2008) Abbas F. M. Alkarkhi; Anees Ahmad; Azhar Mat EasaMultivariate statistical techniques such as cluster analysis (CA), factor analysis (FA) were used for the evaluation of spatial variations and the interpretation of a large complex water quality data set of two selected estuaries of Malaysia. The two locations of interest with 10 sites in each location were Kuala Juru (Juru estuary) and Bukit Tambun (Jejawi estuary).Item Embargo Organochlorine pesticide residue levels in Peninsular Malaysian rivers(Springer, 1994) G. H. Tan; K. VijayaletchumyThe present study was carried out to measure the extent of environmental contamination by these organochlorine pesticides in river waters from Peninsular Malaysia. The growing demand for agricultural lands requires further reclamation of swampy forests, which will result in an increased use of fertilisers (estimated 10 percent increase, from 29,500 t to 32,500 t), weedicide, dalapon (estimated 6 percent increase, from 187,620 kg to 199,530 kg) and pesticides, BHC and thiodan/endosulfan (estimated 2 percent increase, from 312 kg to 318 kg).Item Embargo Dissolved nutrients and chlorophyll a status of the Setiu River, Terengganu, Malaysia(Springer, 2004) S. This causes a rapid boost in construction and other tourism-related activities, such as the growth of vegetables, fruits and flowers. Due to that, the water quality of rivers in the highlands has been adversely affected. In this study, Bertam River, as one of the main streams in Cameron Highlands, was monitored to assess its suitability for recreational activities and conservation. Seven sampling points were selected in the river and tributaries: dissolved oxygen, biochemical and chemical oxygen demands (BOD and COD), total suspended solids (TSS), ammonia nitrate (NH3-N) and pH were measured and the water quality index (WQI) was computed during high and average water flow.Item Embargo Treated water quality based on conventional method in Langat River Basin, Malaysia(Springer, 2020) Minhaz Farid Ahmed; Mazlin Bin MokhtarThe water of Langat River is not suitable for drinking without treatment because of chemical pollution from both the point and non-point pollution sources, although it is one of the primary sources of drinking water in Selangor state, Malaysia. There is no significant study in Malaysia that has investigated the efficiency of treatment plants to remove metals from treated water. Therefore, Chelex 100 resin-ion exchanged method was applied to investigate the raw water samples and treated water samples of eight treatment plants.
