This causes a rapid boost in construction and other tourism-related activities, such as the growth of vegetables, fruits and flowers. Due to that, the water quality of rivers in the highlands has been adversely affected. In this study, Bertam River, as one of the main streams in Cameron Highlands, was monitored to assess its suitability for recreational activities and conservation. Seven sampling points were selected in the river and tributaries: dissolved oxygen, biochemical and chemical oxygen demands (BOD and COD), total suspended solids (TSS), ammonia nitrate (NH3-N) and pH were measured and the water quality index (WQI) was computed during high and average water flow.Item Restricted A half-century record of coral skeletal P/Ca reveals late 20th century nutrient pollution in Port Dickson, Malaysia(Elsevier, 2022) Chen Mengli; Chia Hao Kai; Patrick Martin; Jen Nie Lee; Ryan P.A. Bettens; Jani T.I. TanzilAnthropogenic nutrient pollution has been identified as one of the key stressors of coastal ecosystems. However, the paucity of long-term nutrient records limits our understanding of both the extent of nutrient pollution as well as of the ecological impacts. Here, using coral skeletal phosphorus (P/Ca), we reconstructed a half-a-century record of seawater phosphate at Port Dickson, Malaysia.Item Restricted A multidimensional approach for microplastics monitoring in two major tropical river basins, Malaysia(Elsevier, 2023) Sabiqah Tuan Anuar; Nor Salmi Abdullah; Nasehir Khan E.M Yahya; Teen Teen Chin; Ku Mohd Kalkausar Ku Yusoff; Yuzwan Mohamad; Alyza Azzura Azmi; Maisarah Jaafar; Noorlin Mohamad; Wan Mohd Afiq Wan Mohd Khalik; Yusof Shuaib IbrahimMicroplastics (MPs) with the size of 1 µm–5 mm are pollutants of great concern ubiquitously found in the environment. Existing efforts have found that most of the MPs present in the seas mainly originated from land via riverine inputs. Asian rivers are known to be among the top in microplastic emissions. However, field data are scarce, especially in Malaysia. This study presents the distribution and characteristics of MPs in the surface water of two major river basins of Malaysia, namely Langat River (West Coast/Straits of Malacca) and Kelantan River (East Coast/South China Sea). Water samples were collected at 21–22 locations in Kelantan and Langat rivers, covering the river, estuary and sea.Item Restricted A new soft computing model for daily streamflow forecasting(Springer, 2021) Saad Sh. Sammen; Mohammad Ehteram; S. I. Abba; R. A. Abdulkadir; Ali Najah Ahmed; Ahmed El-ShafieThe ability to forecast streamflow is crucial, as it can help mitigate flood risks. Long-term stream flow data records are needed for hydropower plant construction, flood prediction, watershed management, and long-term water supply use. An accurate assessment of streamflow is considered as very challenging and critical tasks. A new predicting model is developed in this research, combining the technique of sunflower optimization (SFA) as an evolutionary algorithm with the multi-layer perceptron (MLP) algorithm to predict streamflow in Malaysia's Jam Seyed Omar (JSO) and Muda Di Jeniang (MDJ) stations.Item Restricted A preliminary geochemical study on Manukan Island, Sabah(Universiti Malaysia Sabah, 1997) Mohd.
