Item Embargo A comparative study between mainland and islander small-scale fishermen’s adaptation towards climate change(Springer, 2020) Asnarulkhadi Abu Samah; Hayrol Azril Mohamed ShaffrilThe existing literature have demonstrated a considerable amount of existing studies that merely interest on scientific perspectives by examining the physical environmental changes rather than conducting social-based studies that allow for the comparison of adaptation ability between mainland and island small-scale fishermen. Therefore, the current research attempts to fill this gap by investigating the adaptation level of mainland and island small-scale fishermen towards climate changes for the purpose of further identifying any significant differences regarding their adaptation aspects.Item Embargo Adaptation towards climate change impacts among highland farmers in Malaysia(Springer, 2020) Hayrol Azril Mohamed Shaffril; Khairuddin Idris; Hamizah Sahharon; Asnarulkhadi Abu Samah; Bahaman Abu SamahThis study aims to gain more understanding on highland farmers’ adaptation towards the impacts of climate change in Malaysia. Via a multi-stage cluster sampling, this quantitative study has surveyed a total of 400 highland farmers as respondents.Item Embargo Climate change induced adaptation by paddy farmers in Malaysia(Springer, 2012) Md. Mahmudul Alam; Chamhuri Siwar; Mohd Ekhwan bin Toriman; Rafiqul Islam Molla; Basri TalibThe climatic factors are changing very rapidly in Malaysia. For the farmers to adapt with the changes, government and other external agencies are providing several supports. But still there is a gap between farmers' adaptability with climate change and current level of supports. This study uses descriptive statistics, ordinal regression, and percentile analysis to measure the level of farmers' adaptability to climate change as a result of the various existing supports and encouragements provided by the government and other external agencies, and new supports expected by farmers.Item Embargo Comparing adaptation ability towards climate change impacts between the youth and the older fishermen(Elsevier, 2019) Asnarulkhadi Abu Samah; Hayrol Azril Mohamed Shaffril; Mohd Fauzi FadzilIn recent years, a considerable amount of studies published locally which focused on the influence of age on climate change ability. Accordingly, this has driven the present study to achieve its main objective which is to compare the adaptation ability between youth and older fishermen. The current research is quantitative in nature; hence, a survey was conducted on a total of 259 youth and older fishermen residing in different states of Malaysia, namely Pulau Pinang, Terengganu, Johor, and Kedah. The present study managed to conclude a unique and important result which stated that youth and older fishermen within the context of Malaysia have an equally strong adaptation ability.Item Embargo Estimating farmers' willingness to pay for climate change adaptation: the case of the Malaysian agricultural sector(Springer, 2015) Muhammad Mehedi Masud; Ha Junsheng; Rulia Akhtar; Abul Quasem Al-Amin; Fatimah Binti KariThis paper estimates Malaysian farmers' willingness to pay (WTP) for a planned adaptation programme for addressing climate issues in the Malaysian agricultural sector. We used the contingent valuation method (CVM) for a monetary valuation of farmers' preferences for a planned adaptation programme by ascertaining the value attached to address climatic issues in the Malaysian agricultural sector. Structured questionnaires were distributed among the sampled farmers.Item Embargo Impacts and adaptation to climate change in Malaysian real estate(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2017) Shamsuddin Shahid Sahar Hadi Pour; Xiaojun Wang; Sabbir Ahmed Shourav; Anil Minhans; Tarmizi bin IsmailThere is a growing concern in recent years regarding climate change risks to real estate in the developed and developing countries. It is anticipated that the property sector could be affected by variable climate and related extremes as well as by the strategies adopted to combat greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This paper aims to analyse the current knowledge regarding future climate changes to understand their possible impacts on the real estate sector of Malaysia with an aim to help stakeholders to adopt necessary responses to reduce negative impacts.Item Embargo Impacts of climate change on oil palm production in Malaysia(Springer, 2020) Md. Sujahangir Kabir Sarkar; Rawshan Ara Begum; Joy Jacqueline PereiraStudies reveal that climate change (CC) has higher negative impacts on agricultural production than positive impacts. Therefore, this article attempts to explore the impacts of CC on oil palm production in Malaysia and provides mitigation and adaptation strategies towards reducing such impacts.Item Embargo Indigenous perceptions of climate anomalies in Malaysian Borneo(Elsevier, 2019) T. van Gevelt; H. Abok; M.M. Bennett; S.D. Fam; F. George; N. Kulathuramaiyer; C.T. Low; T. ZamanLocal perceptions of climate anomalies influence adaptation behaviour. Specifically, perceptions that are more accurate and homogenous at the community-level are more likely to facilitate the collective action required to adapt to the local effects of climate anomalies experienced by many indigenous communities. We combine primary data on perceptions of climate anomalies from 200 individuals in six Penan villages in Sarawak, Malaysia with instrumental climate data. We find that perceptions of climate anomalies vary substantially in terms of occurrence and magnitude, and do not generally correlate with instrumental climate data.Item Embargo Smallholder oil palm farmers’ pro-adaptation behaviour under climate impact scenario: application of protection Motivation Theory(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2021) Isah Shehu Nabara; Norsida Man; Nitty Hirawaty Kamarulzaman; Zulkefly SulaimanPersistent climate impacts in Malaysia pose severe difficulties for smallholder farmers, whose livelihoodsare primarily dependent on resources from agriculture. Adaptation policies are essential to adapt to the Motivation Theory (PMT) was applied to fill this gap as an underpinning for identifying the major contributing factor of farmers' adaptation behaviour to climate effects.Item Embargo The coastal community awareness towards the climate change in Malaysia(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2015) Hayrol Azril Mohamed Shaffril,; Jeffrey Lawrence D'Silva; Nurani Kamaruddin; Siti Zobidah Omar; Jusang BolongThe present paper attempts to investigate the awareness of coastal community towards climate change in Malaysia and to explore the factors associated with their awareness toward the climate change.
