Item Embargo Concentration and source apportionment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the ambient air of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia(Springer, 2017) Puteri Nurafidah Hosaini; Md Firoz Khan; Nur Ili Hamizah Mustaffa; Norhaniza Amil; Noorlin Mohamad; Shoffian Amin Jaafar; Mohd Shahrul Mohd Nadzir; Mohd Talib LatifThe accumulation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in ambient air affects air quality through the generation of surface level ozone and secondary organic aerosol. A study of the distribution and source apportionment of VOCs was conducted at two stations to investigate the air quality status of Kuala Lumpur. Samples of ambient air were collected into Tedlar sampling bags using an air sampling pump and then pre-concentrated with solid-phase micro-extraction fibre. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was employed to measure the VOC species.Item Embargo Impact of regional haze towards air quality in Malaysia: A review(Elsevier, 2018) Mohd Talib Latif; Murnira Othman; Nurfathehah Idris; Liew Juneng; Ahmad Makmom Abdullah; Wan Portia Hamzah; Md Firoz Khan; Nik Meriam Nik Sulaiman; Jegalakshimi Jewaratnam; Nasrin Aghamohammadi; Mazrura Sahani; Chung Jing Xiang; Fatimah Ahamad; Norhaniza Amil; Mashitah Darus; Helena Varkkey; Fredolin Tangang; Abu Bakar JaafarHaze is a common phenomenon afflicting Southeast Asia (SEA), including Malaysia, and has occurred almost every year within the last few decades. Haze is associated with high level of air pollutants; it reduces visibility and affects human health in the affected SEA countries. This manuscript aims to review the potential origin, chemical compositions, impacts and mitigation strategies of haze in Malaysia.Item Embargo Interaction of PM10 concentrations with local and synoptic meteorological conditions at different temporal scales(Elsevier, 2020) Hanashriah Hassan; Mohd Talib Latif; Liew Juneng; Norhaniza Amil; Md Firoz Khan; Diong Jeong Yik; Nur Aleesha AbdullahChanging meteorological conditions over short and long time scales are anticipated to affect the concentrations of particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter below than 10 μm (PM10) in the atmosphere. This study aims to identify the temporal characteristics of PM10 including its relationship with local and synoptic meteorological conditions in Petaling Jaya (PJ), Malaysia from 1996 to 2016.A high volume sampler (HVS), mounted on the rooftop of MetMalaysia, was used to monitor daily PM10 concentrations. The meteorological parameter data were obtained from the MetMalaysia PJ station.Item Embargo Source apportionment and health risk assessment among specific age groups during haze and non-haze episodes in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia(Elsevier, 2017) Nor Azura Sulong; Mohd Talib Latif; Md Firoz Khan; Norhaniza Amil; Matthew J. Ashfold; Muhammad Ikram Abdul Wahab; Kok Meng Chan; Mazrura SahaniThis study aims to determine PM2.5 concentrations and their composition during haze and non-haze episodes in Kuala Lumpur. In order to investigate the origin of the measured air masses, the Numerical Atmospheric-dispersion Modelling Environment (NAME) and Global Fire Assimilation System (GFAS) were applied. Source apportionment of PM2.5 was determined using Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF). The carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risks were estimated using the United State Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) method. PM2.5 samples were collected from the centre of the city using a high-volume air sampler (HVS).Item Embargo Source contribution of PM2.5 at different locations on the Malaysian Peninsula(Springer, 2015) Ooi Ee-Ling; Nur Ili Hamizah Mustaffa; Norhaniza Amil; Md Firoz Khan; Mohd Talib LatifThis study determined the source contribution of PM2.5 (particulate matter <2.5 μm) in air at three locations on the Malaysian Peninsula. PM2.5 samples were collected using a high volume sampler equipped with quartz filters. Ion chromatography was used to determine the ionic composition of the samples and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was used to determine the concentrations of heavy metals. Principal component analysis with multilinear regressions were used to identify the possible sources of PM2.5.Item Embargo Wavelet-based time series model to improve the forecast accuracy of PM10 concentrations in Peninsular Malaysia(Elsevier, 2015) Doreena Dominick; Mohd Talib Latif; Liew Juneng; Md Firoz Khan; Norhaniza Amil; Mohammed Iqbal Mead; Mohd Shahrul Mohd Nadzir; Phang Siew Moi; Azizan Abu Samah; Matthew J. Ashfold; William T. Sturges; Neil R.P. Harris; Andrew D. Robinson; John A. PyleParticle mass concentrations (PM10, PM2.5 and PM1) and particle number concentration ((PNC); 0.27 μm ≤ Dp ≤ 34.00 μm) were measured in the tropical coastal environment of Bachok, Kelantan on the Malaysian Peninsula bordering the southern edge of the South China Sea. Statistical methods were applied on a three-month hourly data set (9th January to 24th March 2014) to study the influence of north-easterly winds on the patterns of particle mass and PNC size distributions.
