Item Open Access Artificial neural network modeling of the water quality index for Kinta River (Malaysia) using water quality variables as predictors(Elsevier, 2012) Nabeel M. Gazzaz; Mohd Kamil Yusoff; Ahmad Zaharin Aris; Hafizan Juahir; Mohammad Firuz RamliThis article describes design and application of feed-forward, fully-connected, three-layer perceptron neural network model for computing the water quality index (WQI)1 for Kinta River (Malaysia).Item Restricted Extenuation of saline solutes in shallow aquifer of a small tropical island: A case study of Manukan Island, North Borneo(Thai Society of Higher Education Institutes on Environment, 2010) Ahmad Zaharin Aris; Mohd Harun Abdullah; Sarva Mangala Praveena; Mohd Kamil Yusoff; Hafizan JuahirIntensive exploitation of groundwater from Manukan Island, s aquifer has disturbed the natural equilibrium between fresh and saline water and has resulted in the increase of groundwater salinity and the hydrochemical complexities of freshwater-seawater contact. It was observed that the mixing between freshwater-seawater has created diversity in the geochemical processes of Manukan Island, s aquifer and altered the freshwater and seawater mixture away from the theoretical composition line.Item Embargo Impacts of forest changes on indigenous people livelihood in Pekan district, Pahang(Thai Society of Higher Eduation Institutes on Environment, 2010) Rosta Harun; Azizah Sulong; Yip Hin Wai; Tengku Hanidza Ismail; Mohd Kamil Yusoff; Latifah Abdul Manaf; Hafizan JuahirThe forest cover change in the region due to timber extraction and change of land use pattern in the region have brought certain impacts on the livelihood of indigenous people. These people who once highly depended on the forest resources are the most affected. This study was done with the purpose to reveal the importance of forest as a source of their basic need and income for indigenous people and their future generation through the lens of history and place. A qualitative study had been done on the indigenous people that live in three villages in Pekan District, Pahang. Qualitative approach using face-to-face interview was applied to gather the oral history on the impacts of forest change at their place.Item Restricted Imposex in Thais gradata as a Biomarker for TBT Contamination on the Southern Coast of Peninsular Malaysia(Springer, 2010) Ferdaus Mohamat-Yusuff; Syaizwan Zahmir Zulkifli; Ahmad Ismail; Hiroya Harino; Mohd Kamil Yusoff; Takaomi AraiThais gradata samples were collected from six locations along the southern shores of Peninsular Malaysia and analyzed for imposex incidence and organotin (butyltins (BTs), including tributyltin, dibutyltin, and monobutyltin, and phenyltins (PTs), including triphenyltin, diphenyltin, and monophenyltin concentrations), in tissue burden.Item Embargo Spatial water quality assessment of Langat River Basin (Malaysia) using environmetric techniques(Springer, 2011) Hafizan Juahir; Sharifuddin M. Zain; Mohd Kamil Yusoff; T. I. Tengku Hanidza; A. S. Mohd Armi; Mohd Ekhwan Toriman; Mazlin MokhtarThis study investigates the spatial water quality pattern of seven stations located along the main Langat River. Environmetric methods, namely, the hierarchical agglomerative cluster analysis (HACA), the discriminant analysis (DA), the principal component analysis (PCA), and the factor analysis (FA), were used to study the spatial variations of the most significant water quality variables and to determine the origin of pollution sources.
