Item Embargo Assessment of heavy metals contamination in Mamut river sediments using sediment quality guidelines and geochemical indices(Springer, 2015) Bibi Noorarlijannah Mohammad Ali; Chin Yik Lin; Fera Cleophas; Mohd Harun Abdullah; Baba MustaThis paper describes the concentration of selected heavy metals (Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in the Mamut river sediments and evaluate the degree of contamination of the river polluted by a disused copper mine.Item Embargo Distance impacts toxic metals pollution in mining affected river sediments(Elsevier, 2022) Chin Yik Lin; Bibi Noorarlijannah Mohammad Ali; Rohana Tair; Baba Musta; Mohd Harun Abdullah; Fera Cleophas; Feona Isidore; Mohd Shahrul Mohd Nadzir; Muhammad Hatta Roselee; Ismail YusoffThe study of metals mobility derived from mining activities in an ultramafic lithology is limited. This study investigates the effects of distance on potentially toxic metals such as Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn pollution, and the geochemical processes of fluvial system downstream of an ex-copper mine (Mamut River). The toxicity level of the river was evaluated using various sediment quality guidelines, ecotoxicological risks (ecological risk and risk index) and pollution indices. The geochemical behavior and stability of these toxic metals in the solid-phase samples were also examined.Item Metadata only Evaluation of Groundwater Chemistry in the Shallow Aquifer of a Small Tropical Island in Sabah, Malaysia(Penerbit UKM) Ahmad Zaharin Aris; Mohd Harun Abdullah; Sarva Mangala PraveenaItem Restricted Extenuation of saline solutes in shallow aquifer of a small tropical island: A case study of Manukan Island, North Borneo(Thai Society of Higher Education Institutes on Environment, 2010) Ahmad Zaharin Aris; Mohd Harun Abdullah; Sarva Mangala Praveena; Mohd Kamil Yusoff; Hafizan JuahirIntensive exploitation of groundwater from Manukan Island, s aquifer has disturbed the natural equilibrium between fresh and saline water and has resulted in the increase of groundwater salinity and the hydrochemical complexities of freshwater-seawater contact. It was observed that the mixing between freshwater-seawater has created diversity in the geochemical processes of Manukan Island, s aquifer and altered the freshwater and seawater mixture away from the theoretical composition line.Item Restricted Modeling of water balance components in a small island via a numerical model application(Coastal Education & Research Foundation, Inc., 2012) Sarva Mangala Praveena; Mohd Harun Abdullah; Kawi Biding; Ahmad Zaharin ArisThe results of this study provide a management foundation for restoration of the groundwater resources of Manukan Island. The management foundation can also be used with other small islands that have similar hydrogeological conditions for the purpose of groundwater resource protection.Item Restricted Phreatic water quality of the Turtle Islands of East Malaysia: Pulau Selingaan and Pulau Bakkungan Kechil(Universiti Malaysia Sabah, 1999) Mohd Harun Abdullah; Baba MustaThe current water quality of the upper phreatic aquifer fo two small offshore islands were monitored in order to understand its temporal variation on such ecosysem. The rock types and geological stratiagraphy of the islands were identified and related to its ground water chemistry.Item Restricted Sustainable groundwater management on the small island of Manukan, Malaysia(Springer, 2012) Sarva Mangala Praveena; Mohd Harun Abdullah; Kawi Bidin; Ahmad Zaharin ArisNumerical models are capable of simulating various groundwater scenarios and relate it towards groundwater management. This paper focuses on numerical modeling and water balance approaches in the search for a sustainable management plan in Manukan Island. The impacts of pumping and recharge rates represented by groundwater scenarios were investigated by means of hydraulic heads, chloride concentrations and water balance components. Analisis menggunakan kaedah spektrofotometer serapan atom (AAS).Item Restricted The influence of seawater on the chemical composition of groundwater in a small island: The example of Manukan Island, East Malaysia(Coastal Education & Research Foundation, Inc., 2012) Ahmad Zaharin Aris; Sarva Mangala Praveena; Mohd Harun AbdullahManukan Island in Sabah, Malaysia, is characterized as a small, unique island where groundwater is a major source for domestic water and other water-related activities. Hydrochemical studies were carried out in the island with the objective of identifying the influence of seawater on the chemical composition of groundwater in Manukan Island via ionic ratios and saturation states.Item Restricted Understanding of groundwater salinity using statistical modeling in a small tropical island, East Malaysia(Springer, 2011) Sarva Mangala Praveena; Mohd Harun Abdullah; Kawi Bidin; Ahmad Zaharin ArisThis paper presents an understanding of groundwater salinity by identification of effective factors using chemometric methods (cluster analysis and multiple linear regressions) in Manukan Island, Sabah. Local groundwater and environmental properties were used to explore the effective factors of groundwater salinity.
