Item Embargo Dynamic impacts of energy use, agricultural land expansion, and deforestation on CO2 emissions in Malaysia(Springer, 2022) Asif Raihan; Rawshan Ara Begum; Mohd Nizam; Mohd Said; Joy Jacqueline PereiraThis study empirically investigates the nexus among energy use, agricultural land expansion, deforestation, and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in Malaysia. Time series data from 1990 to 2019 were utilized using the bounds testing (ARDL) approach followed by the Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares (DOLS) method. The DOLS estimate findings show that the energy usage coefficient is positive and significant with CO2 emissions, indicating a 1% increase in energy consumption is related to a 0.91% rise in CO2 emissions.Item Embargo Impacts of and Adaptations to Sea Level Rise in Malaysia(IOS Press, 2014) Md. Sujahangir Kabir Sarkar; Rawshan Ara Begum; Joy Jacqueline Pereira; Abdul Hamid Jaafar; M. Yusof SaariSea level rise (SLR) due to global warming would severely affect the coastal areas of many countries of the world through inundation of coastal areas and islands, shoreline erosion, and destruction of important ecosystems such as wetlands and mangroves. A significant increase of sea level would hamper the economy, trade, tourism, biodiversity and livelihood. This article attempts to highlight a snapshot of physical, economic and social impacts of SLR and adaptation measures needed in Malaysia.Item Embargo Impacts of climate change on oil palm production in Malaysia(Springer, 2020) Md. Sujahangir Kabir Sarkar; Rawshan Ara Begum; Joy Jacqueline PereiraStudies reveal that climate change (CC) has higher negative impacts on agricultural production than positive impacts. Therefore, this article attempts to explore the impacts of CC on oil palm production in Malaysia and provides mitigation and adaptation strategies towards reducing such impacts.Item Embargo The awareness, perception and motivational analysis of climate change and business perspectives in Malaysia(Springer, 2013) Rawshan Ara Begum; Joy Jacqueline PereiraThis article aims to present the current state of corporate managers’ awareness and perception of climate change and to identify important motivational factors for company level climate change strategies and actions.Item Embargo The socioeconomic impact of climate-related hazards: flash flood impact assessment in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia(Springer, 2021) Tariqur Rahman Bhuiyan; Ah Choy Er; Nurfashareena Muhamad; Joy Jacqueline PereiraSmall-scale flash flood events are climate-related disasters which can put multiple aspects of the system at risk. The consequences of flash floods in densely populated cities are increasingly becoming problematic around the globe. However, they are largely ignored in disaster impact assessment studies, especially in assessing socioeconomic loss and damage, which can provide a significant insight for disaster risk reduction measures. Using a structured questionnaire survey, this study applied a statistical approach and developed a structural equation model (SEM) for assessing several socioeconomic dimensions including physical impacts, mobility disruption, lifeline facilities, health and income-related impacts.Item Embargo Using best available information to conduct impact assessment of future climatic hazards on a landfill(Springer, 2021) Nurul Syazwani Yahaya; Joy Jacqueline Pereira; Mohd Raihan TahaThe best available information on climate change projections is used here in conjunction with the observation-based conceptual site modeling framework that draws on the source-pathway-receptor-consequences approach, to conduct an impact assessment of future climatic hazards on the Panchang Bedena landfill in Selangor, Malaysia.
